Nestled away from the coastline, a beautiful split-level family home presented us with a unique challenge: the creation of an outdoor entertainment space that not only meets the family's needs but also compensates for its distance from the beach. Recognising the importance of outdoor living, especially in homes located away from the water, our clients sought to bring the luxury and relaxation of a coastal retreat to their backyard. This ambition set the stage for a transformative project aimed at crafting a resort-style garden oasis.
Understanding the Family's Vision
The primary goal was clear from the outset: to design an outdoor area that could serve as the heart of the family's social and leisure activities. A pool was essential, not just as a luxury feature but as a focal point for gatherings, relaxation, and play. However, the vision extended beyond just adding a pool; it was about creating a comprehensive resort-style experience that could offer an escape within the comfort of their own home.
The Design Journey
Our design process began with a thorough assessment of the split-level property's unique layout. The centrepiece of our design was, without doubt, the swimming pool. Designed to reflect the tranquillity and luxury of a resort, the pool area was conceived with relaxation and entertainment in mind. Surrounding the pool, we integrated a variety of seating options, from sun loungers to shaded areas, ensuring comfort throughout the day and evening.
Beyond the pool, we wanted the garden to offer multiple layers of enjoyment. This led to the creation of a tiered garden area, where each level offered its own unique allure. From tranquil water features to cozy fire pits, every element was chosen to enhance the sense of escape and to cater to different moments—whether it's hosting a lively barbecue or enjoying a quiet evening under the stars.
Material and Plant Selection
In selecting materials and plants for the garden, our aim was to evoke the serene and lush atmosphere of a coastal resort. We chose materials that not only complement the home's architecture but also add to the garden's resort feel—think natural stone pathways, elegant hardwood decking, and soft, ambient lighting. The plant palette was carefully selected to create a lush, tropical feel, with an emphasis on low-maintenance species that ensure the garden remains a haven without the hassle.
