Noraville - Modernist Californian Style

In our latest project, we had the privilege of working on a sprawling coastal property inspired by the sleek, sun-drenched designs of Modernist Californian architecture. This design journey was not merely about creating a landscape that complements the architectural ethos but also about embedding sustainability and texture into the very fabric of the garden. The result is a breathtaking outdoor space that seamlessly blends with its natural surroundings while making a bold, eco-conscious statement.

Modernist Californian Inspiration

The essence of Modernist Californian architecture lies in its ability to harmonise with the landscape, featuring open spaces, seamless indoor-outdoor transitions, and a deep respect for natural light and airflow. Our design aimed to mirror these principles in the garden, starting with low-level plantings at the property's front. These plantings are not just aesthetically pleasing but are chosen for their resilience and ability to thrive in the coastal environment.

Guiding "Sentinels"

A standout feature of this project is the use of sandstone "Sentinels" - striking, sculptural elements that guide visitors through the property to discover its various garden areas. These sentinels are more than just navigational aids; they are a nod to the property's natural surroundings, echoing the rugged beauty of the coastline. Their placement among the soft, low-level plantings creates a contrast that is both visually appealing and thought-provoking, encouraging a moment of reflection as one transitions from one space to another.

Textural Combinations

The garden's design is a testament to the power of texture. By combining a variety of materials and plants, we've created a rich tapestry that invites exploration and interaction. The juxtaposition of rough with smooth, hard with soft, creates a dynamic environment that changes with the light and season, ensuring the garden is always engaging.

Rustic Modern Aesthetic with Recycled Materials

Sustainability was a key focus of this project, with a material palette consisting primarily of recycled materials. This choice was not only an environmental statement but also a design one, contributing to a rustic modern aesthetic that complements the property's architecture. Recycled wood, repurposed stone, and other salvaged materials were carefully selected and incorporated into the design, proving that sustainability and style can go hand in hand.

This coastal property is a celebration of Modernist Californian architecture, sustainability, and the art of garden design. Through the use of low-level plantings, sandstone sentinels, and a rich mix of textures and recycled materials, we've created a space that is both a tribute to its inspirations and a forward-looking vision of landscape design. It's a place where every element has been thoughtfully chosen to contribute to an overarching sense of harmony and beauty, making it a true modern oasis.
